Pangasius export value 4 times higher than the volume

Exports to some markets recorded dramatic growth, i.e. the U.S. up 98 percent, Brazil 262.2 percent, the Philippines 104 percent, Thailand 84 percent, Russia 58.2 percent and Mexico 55.9 percent.

The EU: Exports to EU market seemed to slow down with a modest growth of 1.6 percent in value. Some main importers continued to reduce imports of Vietnam pangasius such as Spain (down 20.8 percent), Poland (-8.1 percent) and Germany (-4.3 percent). This drop was due to the competition of local whitefish and other imported fish (cod, tilapia..) and the negative impact of untrue stories about Vietnam pangasius in some EU members.

The U.S.: The market remained the leading position among Vietnam pangasius importers. Exports to the U.S. market rose drastically to over 24,000 MT, valued US$80 million, representing for 15 percent of the total pangasius exports.

Now, Vietnam pangasius exported to the U.S is obstructed by barriers as anti-dumping duty,  expanded catfish definition with the aim at putting Vietnam pangasius under USDA jurisdiction. However, Vietnam pangasius products are still comsumed strongly in the U.S. As the result, in Q.I/2011, fish exported to the market showed the growth of 76.6 percent.

Mexico: This was a potential and stable market for Vietnam pangasius with the export volume of 33,400 MT in 2010, worth US$86 million. In the first four months of 2011, Mexico imported over 16,000 MT of pangasius, valued US$39 million, up 40 percent in volume and 55.5 percent in value from the same period last year.

Brazil: In the first four months of 2011, the country recorded the highest growth which helped Brazil go up in the ranking of top importers, from the 12th to the 6th. Brazil imported 7,300 MT of pangasius in the period, worth US$17.5 million, up 218 percent in volume and 262 percent in value. Currently, many Vietnamese fish exporters are interested in this market; however, the 60-days term for receiving export certificate, instead of the 3-days as regulated before, puts them into difficulties.

The top 10 exporters of Vietnam represented about 40 percent of the total export value, in which Vinh Hoan Corp. was the leading enterprise with the export value of US$42 million, accounting for 8.11 percent of the country’s export value. The company is trading its products in 30 markets. The second place belongs to Hung Vuong Corp. which is connected with 39 markets, accounting for 7 percent of the total export.
