Norway cod exports to Spain skyrocket in January

Exports of fresh cod from Norway to Spain during the month of January increased by 383.3 percent in volume and 356.9 percent in value compared to the same month last year, according to Juan Bergas Nerge at Innovation Norway.

Last month, Spanish imports of fresh Norway cod reached 841 MT valued at NOK 175.9 million (USD 29.1 million, EUR 21.2 million), up from 174 MT valued at 38.4 million (USD 6.4 million, EUR 4.6 million) in January 2013.

Exports of frozen Norway cod to Spain also jumped by 106.3 percent in volume to 198 MT and 113.8 percent in value to NOK 32 million (USD 5.3 million, EUR 3.9 million), Bergas Nerge told SeafoodSource.

In January, total Norway seafood exports to Spain reached 6,227 metric tons (MT), valued at NOK 193.3 million (USD 32 million, EUR 23.3 million), representing a 34.4 percent and 26.1 percent increase compared to January 2013, respectively.

The increase is attributed to lower prices.

“In addition, during the month of January we had heavy storms in northern Spain,” said Bergas-Negre. “The Spanish fishing fleet has not been able to operate most of the month.”
