(vasep.com.vn) Mekong Delta produces 90 percent of rice, 65 percent of fishery products and 70 percent of fruits of the total production of the country.
However, the rate of products sold under contracts was low. The Mekong Delta provinces are taking a number of measures to improve the competitiveness of their farm production.
Accordingly, by 2020, the localities will step up the application of advanced knowledge and technology in agro-fishery production, processing and post-harvest preservation.
The Mekong Delta provinces will coordinate with neighboring provinces in building concentrated production areas, creating a link between raw material production areas and processing plants, consuming markets and distribution system with the aim to shift from a household economy into farming economy.
By 2015, at least 30 percent of rice and 40-50 percent of pangasius will be sold under contracts and the rates are set to increase every year. A similar way is also applied to other key products like fruits, vegetables, livestock and poultry meat.
These provinces also focus on promoting trademarks and traceability for farm products, associating with foreign businesses, to enhance competitiveness, develop markets and increase the selling of products in the domestic market through distribution system from urban areas to rural areas and remote areas.
The agro-fishery production has been adjusted to be more friendly with the environment and capable of fulfill the varied tastes of consumers. The localities also strengthened inspecting fishery products’ quality, numbering fish farming areas to implement their traceability.
Local enterprises will focus on improving production conditions to produce more value-added products, effectively controlling quality to ensure prestige and brand name of Vietnam farm products.
