(vasep.com.vn)In 2013, Kien Giang province's aquaculture area was 162,611 hectares, fetching the fish production of 143,986 MT, up 13.39 percent year-on-year.
Fish farming models applied by districts of the province proved their high efficiency were the models of intensive, semi-intensive shrimp farming, rice-shrimp rotation farming, innovated extensive shrimp farming in coastal areas, marine crab and mollusk rearing, etc.
In 2013, the province handed over 7,179 hectares to local processors for them to expand shrimp farming area.
This year, the province has given priority to develop whiteleg shrimp and rice-shrimp farming. However, lost shrimp farming area of the locality amounted to 15,567.3 hectares, 7,716.3 hectares higher than that of the same time of last year. It was attributable to unstable water environment in farming ponds, unappropriated control of shrimp seed, inadequate water irrigation system.
In 2014, the province set the target of 52,000 MT of farmed shrimp production, 10,000 MT higher than 2013 under the models of intensive shrimp farming, rice-shrimp farming, innovated extensive shrimp farming, co-cultivating shrimp and marine crab, blood cockle.
To realize the target, the province needs over 4.18 billion of black tiger shrimp seed, 1.9 billion of whiteleg shrimp seed while the province can produce only 540 million of black tiger shrimp seed and 900 million of whiteleg shrimp seed.
To reduce losses, relevant authorities strengthened to inspect and monitor producing and trading of fish seed including shrimp seed produced by the province and sourced from outside province.
Besides, the province recommends the state and competent authorities to invest more in the locality’s shrimp farming areas.
