(vasep.com.vn) In the first 9 months of 2014, Vietnam’s pangasius exports were US$ 1.276 billion, up 0.2% year on year. Pangasius, accounted for 22 % of total seafood export value of Vietnam, was the second most exported seafood, after shrimp.
The EU and the US, the 2 major markets, accounted for 39.3% of Vietnam’s pangasius exports, decreased their demand, compared to 45.1% of 2013. Import price of the EU dropped by 8.4% and it fell by 16.7% in the US. Vietnamese exporters tried to expand into emerging markets to offset the decline in these markets.
EU, accounted for 20.4% of total export turnover of Vietnam, was still the largest pangasius import market for Vietnam. According to the Vietnam Customs, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to the EU in the first 9 months of 2014 were US$ 261.02 million, down 8.4% year on year. Spain continued to be the leading consumption market, followed by the Netherlands, Germany and the UK.
The US, made up 18.9% of total pangasius exports of Vietnam, was ranked the 2nd in importing pangasius from Vietnam. According to the Vietnam Customs, pangasius exports to the US in the first 9 months of 2014 reached US$ 240.81 million, down 16.7% year on year.
According to National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), the first 8 months of 2014, the US imported 63,276 MT of pangasius from Vietnam, down 14.71% year on year. Vietnam, accounted for 92.7% of the total volume of pangasius and catfish exports to the US, maintained its 1st rank at importing pangasius to the US market.
ASEAN, the 3rd biggest importer of Vietnam’s pangasius, has maintained its positive pangasius imports growth since the beginning of the year. According to the Vietnam Customs, pangasius exports to this market in the first 9 months of 2014 valued at US$ 102.68 million, up 12.4% year on year. In Q3/2014 only, Vietnam’s pangasius exports were worth US$ 30.48 million, up 1.7% year on year. Thailand was the biggest importer, followed by Singapore and the Philippines.
