Dong Thap to remove technical barriers in international trade

(vasep.com.vn) In September 16th

In 2010, export turnover of Dong Thap province mainly came from rice and pangasius in which export turnover of pangasius was estimated to reach US$299 million and export turnover of rice reached US$117 million. Besides, in 2010, temporary import for re-export petrol contributed to increase goods export turnover of the province to US$585 million, 31 percent higher than the target.

In the first 8 months of 2011, Dong Thap export turnover was 51 percent higher than that of the same period last year. However, in recent time, Vietnam export in general and Dong Thap export in particular have faced with a lot of difficulties due to technical barriers in international trade such as the U.S anti-dumping duty’s imposition on Vietnam pangasius, Russian regulations on the rate of glazing on frozen finfish, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) put Vietnam pangasius in the red list …

In such difficult state, local pangasius processors and exporters have to renovate and improve trade promotion, develop the market as well as apply modern technologies in manufacturing and rearing. Their finished products must meet food safety standards of the foreign countries, an economic expert from MOIT said.Local processors should step up to use environment friendly and recycled products and improve the quality of key products and create specific products. Local enterprises should avoid dumping and obey international standards in manufacturing.

The conference raised the awareness of leaders from the provincial levels and enterprises about WTO rules and challenges in the process of world economic integration and trade barriers. The conference also suggested strategies in production for enterprises to strengthen goods export of the province.
