Dong Thap supplying 70 percent of pangasius seeds in Mekong Delta
(pangasius-vietnam.com) So far, Dong Thap - a province in Mekong Delta - has totaled 164 fish processing and trading companies and 1,264 hatcheries, according to Dong Thap People’s Committee. In which, there were pangasius and shrimp hatcheries were 1,174 and 25 units, providing 28.406 billion fish fries and more than 2 billion seeds per year.
Dong Thap accounted for 60 – 70 percent of pangasius seed production in Mekong Delta. The province has also strength in aquaculture of pangasius and freshwater giant prawns. Between January and September 2013, pangasius output reached 327,000 MT to fulfill 72.3 percent of yearly target, representing the major part in Mekong Delta’s supply of the fish.
These recent years, the province has invested VND78.5 billion from provincial budget and VND248 billion came from the private sector in developing infrastructure such as electricity and water irrigation systems for farming activities. So far, superficies for pangasius and shrimp production were 1,900 hectares and 1,285 hectares, respectively.
