Dong Thap restructures pangasius sector towards sustainability

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Dong Thap is accelerating the restructuring of its pangasius sector to enhance value and ensure sustainable growth. In the first half of 2025, Vietnam’s pangasius output reached over 871,900 MT, up 4.5% year-on-year, while export value hit USD 1.023 billion, up 11%. Dong Thap continues to play a key role, contributing about 35% of both output and export turnover.

According to its 2025 plan, the province targets 2,640 hectares of pangasius farming, with an output of 555,000 MT worth more than VND 9 trillion, and export turnover exceeding USD 980 million. To achieve this, Dong Thap is implementing comprehensive measures: digitalizing identification codes for all farming areas, ensuring 100% of facilities are certified for safe production, and applying GAP standards to about 50% of the farming area. More than 75% of commercial pangasius fry will be quality-controlled through the three-level seed program and stronger linkages among hatcheries, cooperatives, and farmers.

The provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment stressed its focus on environmental monitoring and promoting digital transformation in management and operations. The Vietnam Pangasius Association also recommended expanding value chain linkages, adopting new farming methods, applying advanced technology, and upgrading certification standards to adapt to climate change. With this strategy, Dong Thap reaffirms its leading role and contributes to strengthening Vietnam’s pangasius industry position in the global market.
