(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In Aug and Sep 2016, Vietnam pangasius exports to China peaked at US$30.9 million and US$30 million, respectively. As of Sep 2016, Vietnam pangasius exports to China -Hong Kong totaled US$201.9 million, up 75.6% over the same period last year. After months of consecutive growth, China has overtaken the EU to become the 2nd largest buyer (behind the U.S.) of Vietnam pangasius.
The U.S.
Through Sep 2016, the U.S. remained as the largest importer of Vietnam pangasius with a total value of US$286.8 million, up 23.1% year on year. Despite a fall in the number of companies engaged in exporting pangasius to the market, the shipments to this market reached the high value. So far, pangasius from Vietnam still had to compete with tilapia from China in the U.S, face with antidumping duty.
EU
As of Sep 2016, Vietnam pangasius exports to the EU valued at US$197.1 million, down 9.9% from the same period last year. In the period, out of top importers in the bloc, sales to the UK showed the year-on-year rise of 0.1%, while those to the Netherlands, Spain and Germany fell by 10.7%, 14% and 0.3%, respectively.
Potential markets: ASEAN, Mexico, Brazil
In Jan-Sep 2016, Vietnam pangasius exports to ASEAN recorded a slight increase of 0.3%; while those to Mexico and Brazil dropped by 6.9% and 14.3%, respectively compared to the same period in 2015.
