Belgium supports Vietnam in producing oyster and snout otter clam seed

(vasep.com.vn) Research Institute for Aquaculture No3 (RIA3) in Nha Trang province will be granted nearly US$415,000 (non-refundable capital) by Belgium government and Gent university to produce annually at least 20 million of oyster and snout otter clam seed.

The project targets to ensure the supply of oyster and snout otter clam seed with high commercial value for farmers in the central region.

Annually, RIA3 produces 20 million seed, including 16 million of oyster seed and 4 million of snout otter clam seed which are sold partly in the market to fund other research programs on two species and offered to fish farmers in Khanh Hoa, Phu Yen, Binh Dinh provinces, Mr. Dao Van Tri, Director of RIA 3 said.

Oyster and snout otter clam are bred not only in the northern provinces (Quang Ninh) but also in some central provinces (Khanh Hoa, Quang Nam, Phu Yen, Binh Dinh) with a majority of wild-caught seed. Thus, according to RIA 3, with sufficient supply of seed, central provinces can develop oyster and snout otter clam farming in the large scale with export orientation in the next few years.

The project will take effect since September 15th and last 4 years. The project led by RIA 3 has total capital of US$497,559 in which US$415,000 was funded by Belgium and the other is contributed by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).
