136 markets consuming Vietnamese pangasius
(pangasius-vietnam.com) In 2013, Vietnam shipped pangasius products to 136 markets to bring back US$1.8 billion. However, the fish industry was still suffering losses, pushing many farmers to leave their ponds.
Currently, Vietnam totaled 4,679 hectares for pangasius production, a drop of 13 percent year on year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD). Harvested area was 3,638 hectares for total production of 1 million MT, down 3 percent compared to that of a year ago.
MARD reported that more than 90 percent of pangasius products was sold abroad while the domestic market consumed only 1 percent. In 2014, exporters are encouraged to boost sales in the domestic to help local farmers get more profits to keep business.
