(seafood.vasep.com.vn) According to General Department of Vietnam Customs, Vietnam’s cephalopod exports in Jan-Nov this year totaled US$391.03 million, down 0.5% from the same period last year. The figure in Nov 2016 was US$49.05 million, up 27% year on year. Notably, in November, Vietnam’s cephalopod exports to 9 main importing markets reported the positive growth. Of that, shipments to Taiwan showed the highest increase (+91.2%) with the value of US$766 thousand, followed by China and Hong Kong (+70%) with US$2.1 million. Exports to top 3 largest importing markets, including South Korea, Japan and EU all rose by over 16% year on year.
In the first 11 months of 2016, Vietnam’s cephalopod exports to South Korea were worth by US$147.5 million, down 1.4% from the same period last year. South Korea stayed as the leading importer of Vietnam’s cephalopod, picking up 37.7%. The reason that the country boosted imports of Vietnam’s cephalopod in late 2016 was partly driven by a decline in its fishery production this year. In the first half of this year, the output of aquatic products in South Korea dropped by 0.6% over the previous year, mainly due to a fall in volume of offshore and inshore fishing. According to statistics of South Korea, in the period, its total fishery output reached 2 million MT, down from 2.01 million MT last year. Of that, its offshore fishing output touched 208,000 MT, down 41.3%; while its inshore fishing output hit 363,000 MT, down 15.6% year on year.

Japan stayed as the 2nd largest importer with the proportion of 25%. In Nov 2016, Vietnam’s cephalopod exports to Japan valued at US$12.4 million. The figure in Jan-Nov estimated at US$97.7 million, up 4.1%; followed by the EU with the value of US$60.3 million in the period, up 6.6% year on year.
In terms of product structure, exports of squid accounted for 58.4% while those of octopus made up 41.6%. In Jan-Nov 2016, Vietnam’s squid exports amounted to US$228.4 million. In particular, shipments of live/fresh/frozen squid (HS code 03) reached the highest value of US$133.5 million, followed by dried/grilled squid (HS code 03) with US$81.01 million. Meanwhile, exports of other processed squid (HS code 16) hit US$13.8 million. In the period, Vietnam’s octopus exports totaled US$162.5 million. In which, those of dried/salted/live/fresh/frozen octopus (HS code 03) touched US$129.8 million and those of processed octopus (HS code 16) reached US$32.6 million.
