(seafood.vasep.com.vn) According to the statistics from Vietnam Customs, after declining in January 2017, Vietnam's cephalopod exports had grown steadily for the next five months. Therefore, the exports in the first 6 months of 2017 amounted to US$269 million, an increase of 50% over the same period in 2016.
As of June 2017, Vietnam’s exports of cephalopod items all rose over the same period last year. Notably, exports of dried/grilled squid (HS code 03) and processed octopus both recorded the good growth of 30.7% and 96.4%, respectively.
Vietnam's squid exports remained to account for 61.4% of Vietnam's total cephalopod sales in the first half of 2017. Especially, exports of live/fresh/frozen squid (HS code 03) picked up 40.3% and experienced the fastest growth of 79.5% over the same period in 2016.
Currently, Vietnam cephalopod was exported to 54 markets, down from the same period last year. However, thanks to the good growth in markets, the total export value soared.
Top 9 leading importers of Vietnam cephalopod remained unchanged since the beginning of the year, including South Korea, Japan, the EU, ASEAN, China, Israel, Taiwan, the U.S and Australia, accounting for 99% of total cephalopod exports in Jan-Jun 2017. Exports to these markets through June 2017 tended to accelerate over those before.
Specifically, after the decline in exports in January 2017, Vietnam’s cephalopod shipments to South Korea continuously increased. The figure in Jan-Jun 2917 was US$95 million, up 40.5% over the same period in 2016, accounting for 35% of Vietnam’s total cephalopod exports. South Korea remained its 1st rank in top Vietnam's biggest importing markets.
Vietnam’s cephalopod sales to Japan grew continuously from the beginning of the year. The figure in the first half of 2017 estimated at US$63 million, up 39.4% year on year and accounted for 23%.
Exports to the EU witnessed the high growth rate in the first 6 months of this year with the value of US$51.5 million, an increase of 101.6% year on year. Italy, France and the Netherlands continued to be top 3 largest importing markets in the EU. Remarkably, cephalopod imports into France and the Netherlands from Vietnam continued to experience an impressive growth rate at 3-digit level.
ASEAN continued to hold the 4th rank in the period. Vietnam’s cephalopod exports in Jan-Jun 2017 to the region amounted to US$30 million, up 30% from the year before, picking up 77% of Vietnam’s cephalopod sales. Thailand and Malaysia were two major importers of Vietnam cephalopod in ASEAN. Vietnam’s enterprises continued to boost exports of the item to ASEAN.
In the coming time, Vietnam’s cephalopod exports expected to continue the good growth.
