(seafood.vasep.com.vn) After declines, imports of cephalopod into the US tended to rise from the beginning of the year. The import volume peaked at 24,858 MT in QIII/2016, QII/2016 with 22,475 MT and QI/2016 with 22,080 MT. This was driven by an increase in demand for this item for the upcoming holidays.
China was the leading supplier of cephalopod to the US, accounting for 45-50% of total imports into the market. Spain ranked the 2nd with the share of 12-13% and Thailand ranked the 3rd with the share of 5.5-7% of total import value. Viet Nam stayed as the 13th largest exporter of this item to the US, making up 1% of total import value. Vietnam’s cephalopod exports to the US in the first 9 months of this year decreased in both volume and value.
Imports of frozen squid (HS code 030749) into the US took up the biggest proportion, followed by frozen octopus (HS code 030759). Those of processed squid ranked the 3rd and followed by processed octopus. In Jan-Sep 2016, imports of frozen squid into the US were worth by US$200 million, up from US$172 million in the same period last year. Meanwhile, imports of frozen octopus reached US$70 million, down from US$77 million year on year. Besides, those of processed squid and live/fresh/chilled squid as well as live/fresh/chilled octopus also decreased in the first 9 months of this year.
The import price of processed octopus into the US hit the highest levels. In Jan-Sep this year, the price of processed octopus ranged from US$6.9 to 7.9/kg; followed by live/fresh/chilled octopus with US$5-7.7/kg. The average export price of Vietnam’s processed octopus to the US in Jan-Sep this year quoted at US$5.8-9.9/kg. Viet Nam claimed as the 5th largest supplier of processed octopus to the US, behind China, Spain, Japan and Thailand; with the share of 4%.
