I. Over view

Pangasius have been raising and developing mostly in 10 Mekong Delta River provinces of Vietnam, including: An Giang, Dong Thap, Tien Giang, Can Tho, Vinh Long, Ben Tre, Hau Giang, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh, Kien Giang, and two provinces (Tay Ninh and Quang Nam) with total farming area of 6,078 hectares (in 2017) and expected to rise up to 7,600 – 7,800 hectares in 2020. Provinces of Can Tho, An Giang and Dong Thap are the leading culture regions of Pangasius in the Mekong Delta, account for over 75% of the total national Pangasius production. Pangasius industry is selfcontrolled in raw material sources toward sustainable production chain.

Pangasius products are produced in compliance with strict international food safety and international quality management standards such as GlobalGAPASC and BAP..

Pangasius is more and more popular in the world thanks its heath and nutrition. The fish has been exported to 132 countries and territories in 2018, including demanding markets as the EU, Brazil, USA, Australia and Canada.

There are nearly 100 pangasius factories in Vietnam. Mostly locate in the Mekong Delta. The majority of these establishments are equipped with advanced equipments and technologies which allow to automating several stages of production line and producing added value products.

According to the Directorate of Fisheries, in 2018, the farming area of pangasius in the Mekong Delta region was estimated to reach 5,400 hectares (up 3.3% compared to 2017), the output was estimated to reach 1.42 million tons, up 8.4% compared to 2017.

In 2018, localities replaced 30 thousand broodstocks, thus the quality of pangasius breed have been gradually improved; the breeding and commercial production of pangasius have been basically controlled. The 3-level pangasius production project in the Mekong Delta provinces and the associated activity in 3-level pangasius production have brought initial efficiency.

In 2018, Vietnamese pangasius was exported to 132 markets, compared to 137 ones of 2017. In 2018, the total pangasius export value of Vietnam was US$2.26 billion, up 26.5% over 2017. Top 8 main importers including the U.S, China - Hong Kong, the EU, ASEAN, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia and the UAE reached US$1.82 billion, accounting for 80.5% of the total export value.
