In September 2021, Vietnam's tuna export turnover decreased by 15% over the same period, reaching nearly 51 million USD.
The main cause of this decline is the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak in the southern provinces in the past few months, which has caused many difficulties in processing and exporting activities of enterprises. Export value to main markets decreased over the same period.
Tuna exports to the US market in September decreased by 7.6% over the same period last year. The US has now allowed food service chains to reopen, which is expected to boost US demand for tuna imports, especially when this market is preparing to enter the festive season at the end of the year. However, US imports of processed tuna are still at a low level, and have tended to decrease continuously since March.
For the EU, tuna exports also decreased by 25% in September. Exports to all three main markets in the bloc, Italy, Germany and Spain, also declined in the past month. In particular, exports to Italy continued to decline sharply over the same period. Currently, EU tuna imports are at a low level, especially canned tuna imports. Rising sea freight costs and rising steel prices are making it difficult for US and EU canned tuna imports to increase again.
Tuna exports to the CPTPP also fell further in September, with the turnover this month down 28% over the same period and currently standing at nearly $6 million. Exports to the four largest markets in the bloc, Canada, Japan, Mexico and Chile, all decreased.
Currently, countries are gradually reopening, import demand in major markets such as the US, EU, Canada, etc. will increase in the last months of the year. Vietnamese enterprises are preparing for export shipments at the beginning of next year to take advantage of tariff incentives under the agreements.

As global demand for affordable whitefish continues to rise, Vietnam is emerging as a noteworthy competitor to traditional tilapia powerhouses such as China, Indonesia, Brazil, and Egypt.
