As prediction of short supply of raw pangasius in 2011, Hung Vuong Corp has focused on developing fish farming areas since 2010. So far, Hung Vuong Corp has totaled more than 250 hectares of pangasius farms and over 100 hectares owned by farmers which cooperate with the company. As the result, the company harvested over 100,000 MT per month, ensuring about 70 percent of raw fish for processing. Hung Vuong Corp expects to reach total export value of US$200 million this year.
Recently, the company is operating 12 processing plants with total production capacity of 1,300 MT a day, employing 10,000 workers. Hung Vuong Corp has already proposed Tien Giang People’s Committee to grant the area of 15 hectares in order to build a new rice processing plant for export, and to provide feed for local livestock farmers.
Up to the end of July 2011, Hung Vuong Corp shipped abroad 27,000 MT of pangasius for US$80 million, remaining the 2nd position among Vietnam leading pangasius exporters and the 3rd position among seafood biggest ones.
According to Mr. Duong Ngoc Minh, General Director of Hung Vuong Corp, pangasius prices in Mekong Delta continue to go up in the next future. Shortage of raw fish will be tougher because farmers are now hesitated in fish stocking.

In the first four months of the year, export turnover totaled USD 289 million, down 4.8%. Although the overall export picture has yet to brighten significantly, market trends are becoming increasingly diversified rather than moving in a single direction.

The result shows that the sector is experiencing a fairly positive recovery, especially in its two key product groups: crabs and swimming crabs. However, behind the growth figures are several concerns: export markets remain highly concentrated, raw material supply is unstable, and trade barriers from the US and EU are becoming increasingly stringent.

In Hung My commune alone, there are about 260 super-intensive shrimp farming households covering more than 265 hectares, playing a key role in local economic development.

Although total export value declined slightly due to decreases in some key markets, many other destinations continued to post strong growth, opening up room for this convenience-oriented processed segment in the coming quarters.
