Japan is Vietnam's largest squid import market and squid also accounts for a larger proportion (58%) of total cephalopod exports to this country. In 2020, Vietnam's dried/grilled squid (HS code 03) exported to Japan was the only item with a positive growth rate of 340% compared to 2019.

According to the World Trade Center (ITC), in the first 11 months of this year, Japan's import of cephalopod reached $347 million, down by 7% over the same period in 2019. In the top 5 largest suppliers, cephalopod imported to Japan from Indonesia increased by 113% to 3.6 million USD. Indonesia is the fifth largest supplier of cephalopod to Japan.
Japan imported cephalopod from 12 sources. China, Vietnam and Thailand are the three largest suppliers, respectively.
Japan imports from Vietnam mainly products such as processed squid (except CO smoked products), processed octopus (except CO smoked products), fresh squid, frozen/smoked/dried/marinated octopus. Processed squid (except CO smoked products) is the product that accounts for the largest proportion in the total cephalopod product structure imported into Japan.

Over the past five years, seafood export turnover to the US has ranged from 1.5 billion USD to 2.1 billion USD anually. Despite facing strict protective policies such as anti-dumping and countervailing duties, U.S. market demand remains high, and the quality of Vietnamese seafood continues to improve, helping to maintain and expand its position in this market.

Within this total, shrimp production stands at 208,495 tons, reaching 82.41% of the planned target and showing a 2.23% increase year-over-year.
