Soc Trang Province: Promoting sustainable, concentrated, and clean brackish water shrimp farming

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Currently, Soc Trang province plans to expand its shrimp farming area from over 50,000 hectares to 57,000 hectares by 2025, aiming for a production of 233,800 tons and maintaining a $1 billion export value. The project will establish 45 climate-resilient shrimp farming models and ensure all farms meet aquaculture standards for traceability.

Soc Trang Province Promoting sustainable concentrated and clean brackish water shrimp farming

100% of fisheries cooperatives, companies, and enterprises in the province have received training to enhance their capacity in management, operation, and guiding the production of brackish water shrimp. The quality of 20 cooperatives has been strengthened and improved to achieve Viet GAP certification. A value chain has been established from inputs to product consumption, with at least 5 linkages in 5 production sub-regions involving signed agreements on input and output supply.

The Soc Trang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has developed the "Soc Trang Brackish Water Shrimp Development Project for the 2023-2025 period, with a vision to 2030." The project will be implemented in five key shrimp-farming districts and towns: Tran De, My Xuyen, Cu Lao Dung, Long Phu, and Vinh Chau. The project will focus on enhancing capacity and training for all stakeholders in the value chain, particularly shrimp farmers, in farming techniques, applying scientific and technological advances, and negotiation skills.

Climate-smart models will be developed to adapt to climate change and diseases, suitable for each ecological and production sub-region. Activities will be carried out to promote sustainable development in each production sub-region, including quality control of broodstock, disease control, product traceability, and building value chains to ensure a supply of quality inputs at reasonable prices and output products that meet export requirements, thus reassuring farmers. Investments in seed production, feed mills, biological products, and waste treatment plants will be encouraged. The project will promote the image of Soc Trang shrimp and contribute to building the brand of Vietnamese shrimp on the international market.
