Vietnam tuna exports soared in 2012

(vasep.com.vn) In 2012, Vietnam tuna sales to markets marked at US$569.4 million, a year-on-year increase of 50.1 percent. Vietnam’s tuna products was shipped to 96 spots on the world in which the U.S. remained as the largest consumer with a proportion of over 40 percent out of the country’s total tuna export value.

Tuna exports to the U.S.in the past year hit US$244.7 million, up 42.8 percent compared to that of 2011. In which exports of canned tuna to the market during the same time reached US$96.6 million, showing an expansion of 41.67 percent over that of 2011.

EU continued to be a potential market for Vietnam tuna products. The region imported US$113.8 million of tuna from Vietnam, a year-on-year increase of 43.1 percent.

In contrast, tuna exports to Japan were choppy and on the wane in the late year. In the first quarter of 2012, tuna exports to the market saw a positive growth of 62.8 – 121.2 percent from that of the same period of 2011. After April 2012, Japan surpassed EU to become the second largest consumer of Vietnam tuna after the U.S. Ending 2012, Japan came back the third rank among main importers of Vietnam tuna.

In 2012, tuna exports to South Korea and Israel showed an impressive growth of 130.1 percent and 1,275.3 percent in turn, compared to those of 2011. Israel outstripped Canada as the fourth largest importer of Vietnam tuna.

Tunisia, South Korea and Mexico were the newcomers in the list of 10 largest importers of Vietnam tuna. Tuna sales to South Korea posted a surprising advance which retained at four digit growth until the end of the year.

Vietnam’s tuna exports in 2012 gained a lot of achievements thanks to high tuna catch landings and increasing demand in many markets.
