(SeafoodSource) The total value of the catch of Icelandic fishing vessels increased by 25.8 percent over the same period last year.
The total value amounted to ISK 47.3 billion (USD 378 million, EUR 300 million) in the period January to March 2012, compared with ISK 37.6 billion (USD 300 million, EUR 238 million) in the first three months of 2011, according to the latest data from Statistics Iceland.
Demersal species accounted for ISK 29 billion (USD 232 million, EUR 184 million). The value of cod accounted for 16.1 billion (USD 128 million, EUR 102 million), marking a year-on-year increase of 17.6 percent. Redfish accounted for 4.8 billion (USD 38 million, EUR 30 million), a 70 percent increase over the same period last year, followed by haddock, which was valued at 4.5 billion (USD 36 million, EUR 28.5 million).
The total value of pelagic species accounted for ISK 14.7 billion (USD 117 million, EUR 93 million) and flatfish ISK 3 billion (USD 24 million, EUR 19 million).
The total catch of Icelandic vessels in May 2012 was 65,426 tonnes, up from 43,441 tonnes in May 2011, according to Statistics Iceland.
