U.S. Top 10: Whitefish increase in popularity
(SeafoodSource) Pangasius was one of the top movers on the annual U.S. seafood Top 10 list, compiled by the National Fisheries Institute (NFI) with data from the National Marine Fisheries Service. The most popular seafood species in terms of pounds per capita, are: Shrimp, canned tuna, salmon, Alaska pollock, tilapia, pangasius, catfish, crab, cod and clams.
The top mover on the list was pangasius, which increased 0.223 pounds from last year to 0.628 pounds per capita. Other species that increased were shrimp, cod and Alaska pollock.
The federal government recently reported that the overall seafood volume was 4.65 billion pounds. The data also showed American seafood companies exported a record 3.3 billion pounds valued at USD 5.4 billion.
“This data shows the importance of the U.S. seafood market, which is now the second largest in the world. Strong export numbers confirm that our customers in Europe and Asia value sustainable and healthy American seafood products,” said John Connelly, president of NFI. “The seafood sector is growing in the volume and value of seafood we can provide to consumers here and abroad.”
