(vasep.com.vn) Portugal is one of the 10 markets accounting for the largest proportion of tuna export value of Vietnam in April 2013.
In the first four months of this year, the value of Vietnam’s tuna exports, to this market, reached nearly US$4 million, up 419 percent compared to the same period of the past year.
Since the EU increased the quota of importing cooked tuna loins, from 15,000 tons to 22,000 tons per year with free tax for Asian countries, imports of this product have been increasing in Portugal.
In the first four months of this year, the imports of tuna loins from Vietnam reached US$2.25 million, an increase of over 941 percent compared to the same period of the past year and 1.4 times of the total value of the last year. Until now, Vietnam is the second largest supplier to Portugal, following Spain. In addition, imports of fresh/frozen tuna products by the country rose 67 percent over last year, reaching US$ 924,850.
Canned tuna products of Vietnam are still not attractive to Portugal people, while Vietnam has a good potential in producing these kind of products. In Jan – Apr 2013, other processed tuna exports by Vietnam to Portugal have also been improved remarkably and Vietnam ranked the fourth position behind Spain, Ecuador and Indonesia among leading tuna exporters to Portugal.
