South Korea and Australia – potential markets for Vietnam shrimp in 2012

(vasep.com.vn) In 2012, Vietnam’s shrimp exports to major markets mostly dropped due to lower demands and financial crisis. Howevers, exports to South Korea and Australia got positive growth levels of 8.8% and 25.7%, respectively.

South Korea was the fifth biggest consumer market of Vietnam shrimp with a proportion of 7.7 percent in total export earnings. In 2012, shrimp exports to the country reached US$171.4 million, up 8.8 percent from that of 2011.

South Korea was considered as a potential market of Vietnam shrimp products as the two countries have been strengthening bilateral trade relationships. Moreover, Korean people have the same consumption habits as Japanese; therefore, South Korea promises a great destination for Vietnamese shrimp products, especially when they have been facing strict anti-biotic barrier by Japan.

However, according to some sources in Vietnamese shrimp industry, South Koreas started to test imported shrimp from Vietnam for Ethoxyquin residues at a very low level of 0.01 ppm since November 19th, 2012.

Australia ranked the sixth importer among Vietnam’s shrimp buyers with a proportion of 4.5 percent in total export value. In 2012, shrimp shipments to Australia increased by 25.7 percent to US$101 million compared to that of 2011.

Australia’s import from Vietnam kept growth through 2012. It reported three-digit growth in February (+173 percent) and in March (+114.6 percent).

In 2012, Thailand speeded up its exports and passed China to become the biggest shrimp shipper to Australia. In 2011, China occupied 31 percent of Australia’s shrimp import; Thailand gained a proportion of only 27.7 percent; Vietnam represented 26 percent.
