Shrimp exports to the U.S. edged up 18.2 percent

(vasep.com.vn) Along with Japan and EU, the U.S. is one of three main importers of Vietnam shrimp. In 2012, Vietnam shrimp shipments to this market sharply decreased of 18.6 percent from the previous year due to low demand, instability of domestic raw shrimp supplies and disease outbreaks.

Vietnam shrimp exports to the U.S. in 2013 are projected to face a lot of obstacles because in the late 2012, the US Department of Commerce (DOC) said that seven shrimp suppliers for the U.S. including Vietnam were receiving subsidy from their governments. DOC’s preliminary determination on countervailing duty on Vietnam shrimp was 6.07 percent. As results, it costs Vietnam shrimp exporters time and money to follow the case.

In the first quarter of this year, shrimp exports to the U.S. sank 2.8 percent. However, exports of Apr and May 2013 reported a sharp growth of 27.3 percent and 58.2 percent, respectively, helping to push shrimp exports in the first 5 months to reach US$194.6 million, up 18.2 percent from that of the same period of 2012.

Vietnam shrimp exports to the U.S. were buoyed because Thailand’s shrimp exports to the U.S. slid 23.5 percent in the first 4 months of 2013.
