Total home tuna consumption in France, including fresh and smoked, was 66,063 metric tons in 2012, down 6%, according to data from Europanel and the Norwegian Seafood Council.
The total volume of salmon consumed increased 15.6% to 64,836t. Salmon volumes increased ahead of the total, which was up 1.1% to 638,135t. In value, the total was up 3.4% to €6.81 billion.
In value, salmon is by far the top species. The total value of salmon consumed in France in 2012 was €1.12bn, up 10%. Tuna is number two on this metric, worth €581.3m, up 0.4%.
A big increase in fresh salmon was the main driver.
The total volume of fresh salmon sold to French households in 2012 increased by 29.8% to 28,185t in 2012.
The average selling price went down 9.9% from to €11.3/kg.
The value of the fresh salmon market reached € 317.8m, up 16,9% compared with 2011.
Mussels are the number three most consumed species in volume, up 8.3% to 45,089t. Shrimp is number three in value, worth €441.9m, up 1.1%.
Cod is number four in volume at 30,087t, up 6%.
NSC said it has seen record sales in France for fresh cod last year where 36.9% of all French households, 9.9 million households, bought fresh cod in 2012. That is 215,000 more households than in 2011.
Scallops are number four in value, worth €257.8m, down 0.4%
Pollock is fifth in volume, with the French buying 29,947t, down 8%. Mackerel is number five in value, worth €233m, up 20.7%.
