(vasep.com.vn) In 2012, decline in export value was seen in most main markets of Vietnam pangasius. However, the fish shipment to Egypt has kept growth and is hoped to increase in 2013 as the country still showed high demand for pangasius products.
Vietnam exported US$48.7 million of pangasius products to Egypt in 2012, up 29.1 percent from the previous year. Trade with the market rose in every month in 2012 and recorded the strongest rise of 132 percent to US$8.2 million in the last quarter of the year.
Egypt is the second most populous country in Africa with a population of 83 million of people. The market is purchasing more food for human consumption, in which a large part was seafood products. According to International Trade Centre (ITC), Egyptian seafood import soared from US$269.67 million in 2008 to US$397.6 million in 2011, mainly from the Netherlands, Vietnam and Norway.
Referring to the latest statistics by ITC, Egypt spent US$184.08 million on imported seafood products in the first four months of 2012, US$32.33 million higher than that of the same period of 2011. In which, purchase from EU countries totaled US$69.87 million and ASEAN suppliers US$20.14 million.
Vietnam always got growth in pangasius export to Egypt over the past years. The fish only saw drop in 2011 due to political crisis in the country, which made Vietnamese exporters hesitant to ship products though demand was still strong.
