Peru's Fishing Sector Decreased in January

In the first month of this year, Peru's fishing sector contracted 17.91 per cent compared to the same month of 2013, due to lower catch of species for indirect human consumption (-44.98 per cent).

However, catches of species for direct human consumption increased by 3.60 per cent.

With regard to fishing for indirect human consumption was influenced by the lower landing of anchovy (219,283 metric tons), compared to 397,417 metric tons of this species reported in January 2013.

On the other hand, the result of direct human consumption (3.60 per cent) contributed the largest catch of species for canning (91.33 per cent), frozen (16.77 per cent) cured (14.14 per cent), however decreased species for fresh consumption (-11.19 per cent)
