Peru: Strong rise in fish oil exports

Peruvian seafood exports in September generated USD 209 million in revenue, representing 42.9 per cent more than that in the same month in 2011, when their value was USD 146.2 million, the Ministry of Production (Produce) reported.

The volume of exports fell by 15.5 per cent, from 141,300 to 119,400 tonnes. This decrease was mainly due to lower sales of fishmeal.

According to the latest Statistical Bulletin issued by Produce, between January and September 2012 the sale abroad of 1,768,300 tonnes of fishery products generated USD 2,733 million, while in the same period last year 1,685,700 tonnes had been exported for USD 2,630.6 million.

Meanwhile, in September 2012 a total of 61,000 tonnes of fishmeal was exported, representing 36.5 per cent fewer than in the same month in 2011 (96,000 tonnes).

With regard to value, in the ninth month last year fishmeal was exported for USD 94.7 million, that is to say, 20.2 per cent less than in September 2011, when the figure totalled USD 118.6 million.

Between January and September 2011, 1,141,000 tonnes of fishmeal were exported, representing 2 per cent more than in the same period in 2011 (1,119,000 tonnes).

September exports increased the sales of fishmeal abroad in the first nine months up to USD 1,483.4 million, 4.2 per cent less than in the same period of 2011 (USD 1,547.9 million).

Meanwhile, crude oil exports totalled 19,700 tonnes last September for USD 38.7 million, that is to say, 360 per cent more than in the same month of 2011 (USD 8.4 million).

Considering the first nine months of 2012, a total of 253,600 tonnes of oil was sold abroad, 37.5 per cent more than in the same period last year (184,500 tonnes).

These sales generated USD 395.3 million, an amount that represents an increase of 66.3 per cent over the same period in 2011 (USD 237.7 million).

In addition, in September 2012 about 30,400 tonnes of frozen products were exported, which is a volume that accounts for a decrease of 6.2 per cent year on year. In terms of value, these sales generated USD 56.2 million, compared to USD 75.9 million in the same month of 2011.

In the first nine months of last year 286,300 tonnes of frozen products were sold abroad, 9.6 per cent less than during the same period in 2011 (316,900 tonnes).
