Tuna production in Mexico increased by 3.26 per cent in 2010, surpassing 132,761 tonnes.
Internationally, Mexico is among the top 10 tuna consuming nations, with a per capita consumption of 1.35kg, according to the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA). A spokesperson said that Mexico had one of the world's most responsible and sustainble tuna fisherys.
In 2009, production reached 128,566 tonnes. For the Mexican fishing fleet, utilisation of the tuna stocks is particularly important, due to the domestic demand and the generation of jobs and trade.
