Mekong Delta reached US$1.6 billion of pangasius export
(vasep.com.vn) Mekong Delta-based provinces have recently sent 53,000 MT of pangasius products abroad. So far, the region reached the total export volume of 592,000 MT, worth US$1.6 billion.
This year, ponds for pangasius production totaled 5,300 hectares, up 11.6 percent from the same period of 2011. However, earnings from export fell by 2.2 percent because price for exported fish products was down by 0.2 – 0.4 US$ per kilogram.
Provincial authorities recommended that fish farmers need to cooperate closely with processing companies in a completed production and distribution chain in order to improve the quality of commercial fish, getting out of difficulties due to the current lower price.
This method could bring highly profitable value and ensure sustainability. Besides, relevent agencies also guide local farmers to apply intensive aquaculture techniques to ensure supply for processing to export.
