Japan helps to increase Binh Dinh tuna price

(vasep.com.vn) Japanese Maguchi Group has visited and worked with leaders of Binh Dinh province to find cooperation possibilities for processing and exporting frozen seafood to Japan.

The event can help tuna price rise and fetch higher profit for local fishermen. The visit of Maguchi to Binh Dinh province follows the province’s investment promotion trip to 4 big cities of Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Sakai and Kyoto) in June 2013.

The province visits to Japan aims to stimulate Japanese enterprises to invest in aquaculture, processing and exporting, especially in ocean tuna products that represent the first items produced in Binh Dinh.

Vietnam-Japan Friendship Association in Osaka prefecture has asked the leaders of the province to send 10 fishermen to Japan to be trained in post-harvest preservation of ocean tuna to enhance the quality of the product and subsequently its export value, provincial chairman Mr. Le Huu Loc said.

Vietnam-Japan Friendship Association is expected to visit Binh Dinh soon in order to evaluate the possibility to build seafood processing facilities for export and, therefore, to cooperate with local enterprises to boost exports of shrimp and finfish, particularly ocean tuna to Japan.

Tuna in Binh Dinh is quoted at VND50,000-55,000 per kilogram, one third lower than that of the same time of 2012.

The sharp decline in tuna price was attributable to the fishing method adopted by fishermen who shifted from tuna longline fishing to tuna handlines using lights, resulting in lower quality catches, according to leaders of Sub-Department of capture fisheries and resources protection Binh Dinh.
