Japan Asks South Korea To Catch Less Bluefin
(House of Japan) Japan’s Fisheries Agency has asked the South Korean government to curtail bluefin tuna catches in light of a surge in tuna imports from the neighboring country, as Tokyo has concerns that internationally agreed on fishing controls are not observed there, sources close to the matter said Monday.
Japan may face criticism that South Korea catches too much tuna in order to export it to Japan as around 90 percent of South Korean tuna exports are heading to Japan.
Given such circumstances, Tokyo has also asked domestic distributors and wholesalers to refrain from importing the overfished marine product from South Korea by reminding them that if the Japanese side keeps importing tuna from South Korea, tuna catches will only grow in the country, according to the sources.
