Slamet Soebjakto, Director General of Indonesia's Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, stated that the country will aim to boost its domestic shrimp production in 2013 by 30% over the previous year to 457,600 tons, according to the Indonesian newspaper Bisnis.
The bullish prospect is apparently backed by the promotion of model farming ponds with high production efficiency in Indramayu and Cirebon regencies in West Java Province.
In 2013, it is envisaged that the space of the model farming ponds will be doubled over the preceding year to 2,000 hectares, and will be expanded to six provinces including East Java and Central Java.
According to the ministry, the country's shrimp production in 2011 totaled 400,385 tons, rising to 457,600 tons in 2012.
The ministry says it aims to push up the annual production by 200,000 tons by 2014.
Indonesian shrimp exporters got a boost last week when the US Dept. of Commerce decided against any countervailing duty on Indonesian shrimp. Indonesia, along with Ecuador, were the only two countries to escape countervailing duties.
