Indian shrimp aquaculture to increase fivefold

A new facility will up the production on the subcontinent. The shrimp aquaculture production in India is expected to increase by fivefold with the expansion of Chennai's Aquatic Quarantine Facility, reported the nation's Business Standard.

According to the Indian Ministry of Agriculture's Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, seafood exports clocked in at an all-time high of INR 166 million ($3 million/€2.3 million), an increase of nearly 30 percent.

Shrimp accounted for 50 percent of the value of seafood exports, achieved mainly by a surge in black tiger aquaculture, the site reported.

"The Ministry of Agriculture added the increased production of vannamei shrimp was one of the major reasons for setting the new high benchmark in seafood exports," the site said.

Vannamei was introduced to India in 2009, when disease and other factors caused a downturn in the nation's shrimp industry. In the recent expansion, the Aquatic Quarantine Facility added an additional wing to have the ability to quarantine more vannamei brooders. The final phase of the expansion, which is underway, will boost the total quarantine capacity even further and create the fivefold increase in Indian shrimp production.
