The nation is exporting more and more of the species.
India continued its catapult of shrimp into the US market, as the US National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) reported import numbers for November 2012.
The south Asia nation, which has been steadily growing its shrimp imports into the United States, went from exporting 9,603 kilos of frozen breaded shrimp in November 2011 to more than 100,216 kilos in November 2012 -- a meteoric jump of 943.6 percent.
With the jump of India's supply, the imports from almost all other providers of frozen breaded shrimp, including China, Thailand and Indonesia, declined.
Total seafood imports from India jumped, as well, from 60.9 million kilos in November 2011 to 73.5 million kilos in November 2012 and the value rose from $568.2 million (€425.5 million) to $598.5 million ($448.2 million) in those respective months, as well.
Total US shrimp imports were down in both kilos and value in November 2012 compared to the same time in 2011.
The United States imported 482.9 million kilos, in November 2012 while the 2011 total for that month was 523.2 million.
Meanwhile, the value for November 2012 was $4 billiion (€2.9 billion) while November 2011 was $4.7 billion (€3.5 billion).
