In 2023, Chile opened its doors to Vietnamese tuna

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) According to statistics from Vietnam Customs, Chile is one of the few tuna export markets of Vietnam that maintained good growth in 2023. Tuna export turnover to this market in 2023 reached nearly 16 million USD, an increase of 87%.

Chile was currently the 13th largest tuna import market among Vietnam's 109 tuna import markets in 2023.

Among Vietnam's exported tuna products to this market, processed and canned tuna products tend to increase sharply, up 192% compared to 2022. Exports of fresh and frozen tuna products and dried tuna also increased, but at a slower rate, up 46%.

In 2023, in the context of high inflation in other countries, inflation in Chile was low. In the second half of 2023, the country's consumer price index decreased continuously. And this is boosting consumption in Chile, including demand for tuna.

Besides, the Chilean market is not as demanding on product quality as the United States, Japan, and European Union (EU) countries, and this is a great advantage for Vietnam's exports.

According to the Vietnamese Ambassador to Chile Pham Truong Giang, Chile is a potential export market for Vietnamese consumer goods, because, in recent years, the living standards of people in this country have increased.

Chile is one of the first countries in Latin America to sign a free trade agreement (FTA) with Vietnam. Therefore, Vietnamese tuna exporters have an advantage over other countries when enjoying preferential tariffs under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
