Imports of raw seafood kept increasing in 2012

(vasep.com.vn) According to Vietnam Customs, in 2012, fish imports into Vietnam gained US$655 million, up 21 percent compared to 2011. Due to lack of domestic supply of raw material, Vietnam continued to boost imports of raw seafood processing and exporting to meet orders.

In which the main imported items were tuna, squid, octopus, salmon and shrimp (black tiger shrimp, whiteleg shrimp and marine shrimp).

The key suppliers of raw fish for Vietnam consisted of Taiwan (skipjack supplier); India and Indonesia (black tiger shrimp supplier); Thailand (whiteleg shrimp supplier); Japan and South Korea (main suppliers of tuna and cephalopod).  
Tuna imports had the sharpest growth of 55.6%, followed by other marine fish with 21.2% and shrimp with 6.3%. There were about 200 seafood companies imported raw material for processing and re - exporting.
