In August, Peruvian fishing exports generated revenues of $363.1 million (€278.1 million), going up by 25.7 percent from $288.8 million (€221.2 million) in August 2011, according to figures released by the Ministry of Production (Produce).
Fishmeal exports rose 2.3 percent to about 125,700 metric tons in August compared to 122,800 metric tons in the same period in the previous year.
This accounted for an export value of $ 189.9 million (€145.5 million), a rise of 18.8 percent from August 2011.
However, between January and August, a total of 1.08 billion metric tons of fishmeal was exported, a 5.6 decrease from the same period in 2011.
The main markets for Peruvian fishmeal were China, Germany, Japan, Vietnam and Taiwan, which bought about 83.5 percent of total sales traded through August 2012.
The total amount of fish oil shipped abroad in August 2012 totaled to 51,800 metric tons for $96.3 million (€73.8 million), a 191.8 percent increase from $33 million (€25.3 million) in August 2011.
In the first eight months of 2012, a total of 233,900 metric tons of fish oil was sold abroad, 30.5 percent more than in the same period last year (179,200 metric tons).
Denmark, Belgium, Chile, Canada, Norway and Japan accounted for 87.4 percent of exports of fish oil registered until last August.
These sales generated $368.7 million (€282.4 million), an increase of 60.8 percent over the same period in 2011 ($229.2 million/€175.6 million).
Frozen exports, on the other hand, decreased by 15.2 percent to 29,100 metric tons in August 2012, compared to 34,300 metric tons in August last year.
