Last year total volume of fish consumed in Germany amounted to about 1.3 million tons (catch weight), of which more than 88% was imported from abroad. Currently, Norway is the largest exporter to Germany. Their import market share is about 15%.
According to the German Fish Information Center, among the most popular fish species in Germany are Alaska pollock, herring, salmon, tuna and pangasius. One of the major features of the German fish market is higher demand for frozen fish, instead of fresh.
More than half the fish sold in Germany is in supermarkets, including discount. Like in other EU countries, prices for fish in Germany are currently steadily increasing, due to growing demand and continued overfishing in some parts of the world.
