Chilean salmon exports to the US continued to surge through October 2012 as the total export value also declined.
According to NMFS, US imports of Chilean Atlantic salmon grew 74% through October 2012, up from 43,694 tonnes in 2011 to 76,258 tonnes in 2012.
However, the growth in Chile's exported salmon volume was accompanied by decreases in the export value. For example, Chilean salmon exports to the US were valued at US$469 million through October 2012,compared to 2011 sales that reached US$618 million, an increase of 31%
The decline in the totaled exported value is related to the fall in per pound prices; the 2011 average price for Chilean salmon was US$10.7/kg compared to 2012's per pound price of US$7.7/kg.
