(seafood.com) Latest reports indicate that Chile’s mussel exports continues to decline amid low availability of raw materials and contracting demand for the product.
Accroding to InfoTrade, Chile exported 40,768 tonnes of mussels through July of this year, down 23% from the same time a year. Moreover, the country’s export value of mussels also declined from US$133.5 million to US$103.3 million year-over-year.
Industry insiders say a shortage of raw materials has played a major role in the decline in exports as prices of the seeds skyrocketed.
Meanwhile, the average price for the commodity has ticked down from US$2.64/kg to US$2.54/kg.
