Bidifishco: Waiting for instructions on EU’s IUU regulation

In the first seven months of 2009, Bidifisco’s seafood export value decreased 15-20 percent compared with the same period last year. Director Cao Thi Kim Lan said her company is cutting down the share of tuna in its seafood export structure, at the same time, diversifying its marine fish products to earn higher profits.

Currently, its two largest tuna importing markets, EU and the U.S., show no recovery signs. To add to this, in response to raw material shortage, Bidifisco is now sourcing materials from Central provinces, Binh Dinh and Khanh Hoa, and boosting imports of raw material from neighboring countries.

Given EU’s Regulation No.1005/2008 on illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU) which come into force in the coming months, Bidifisco like other seafood companies are waiting for instructions and measures from administrative agencies to minimize challenges caused by the Regulation.
