A stable growth for Vietnamese tuna exports to Canada

According to statistics of General Department of Vietnam Customs, during the last three years, Canada became one of the top 10 largest importers of Vietnamese tuna, although tuna exports to this market only occupied a small proportion compared to Vietnam’s total tuna export value. In the first 5 months of 2013, tuna exports to Canada registered a worth of US$5.725 million, representing an increase of 22.2% over the same period of 2012 and making up 2.3 percent of the country’ s total tuna import value.

For the year to date, tuna exports to Canada witnessed a stable growth registered for each month.

Vietnam mainly exports frozen tuna loin to Canada. However, sales of the item to Canada in recent time experienced a setback compared to the same period of 2012. Last year, exports of the item to Canada reached a value over US$4 million, down 18.48 percent against that of the previous year.

Vietnam exporters are boosting canned tuna exports to Canada, the export value of this good from Vietnam to this market is more and more increasing. Compared to 2011, exports of this item in 2012 increased considerably by 100.26 percent.

However, until the end of May 2013, the export value of canned tuna from Vietnam to Canada tended to slow down in comparison with that of the same period of 2012. While exports of frozen tuna and tuna loin marked an advance, in which frozen tuna exports reported the highest growth, up 68 percent from that of the same period of 2012.
