Whiteleg shrimp farming on the rise

According to Department of Aquaculture

Whiteleg shrimp is mainly farmed in coastal provinces from Quang Ninh to Binh Thuan, which accounts for 81 percent of the country’s total area for farming this species. Shrimp output harvested in 60 percent of total farming area by the end of August was more than 48,370MT.

Highest shrimp output was recorded in Binh Thuan province at 6,590MT, Phu Yen 6,196MT, Ninh Thuan 4,774MT, and Quang Ngai 4,124MT.

However, the share of whiteleg shrimp in export seafood structure remained limited. By mid of August, only 670MT of whiteleg shrimp were exported, valued at US$3.362 million.

So far, Viet Nam has 490 whiteleg shrimp hatcheries, producing around 7 billion of shrimp juveniles in the first eight months of the year, but meeting only 60 percent of the demand. (VietFishNews)
