Vietnam strengthening control of disease on shrimp

(vasep.com.vn) Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is directing relevant agencies to improve quality management of agricultural materials for aquaculture, including shrimp farming.

The Ministry intensifies inspecting whole production chain from veterinary drugs trading facilities to ensure fish quality.

In early 2013, shrimp farmers contracted farming area due to disease and unfavorable weather. Since June 2013, farmers have extended farming area and fetched high productivity thanks to higher raw shrimp price. Until October 2013, disease affected farming area of the country was down 46.4 percent year-on-year.

Through October 2013, shrimp stocking area nationwide hit over 650 thousand hectares, completing the yearly plan. During this time, farmers harvested over 396.9 thousand MT, increasing 38 percent year-on-year.

In 2014, Directorate of Fisheries expects that black tiger shrimp output may reach 340 thousand MT on the farming area of 615 thousand hectares, whiteleg shrimp output may rose 20-30 percent year-on-year to reach 230 thousand MT on the area of 60 thousand hectares.
