Vietnam shrimp exports to hit over US$3 billion in 2016

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Mr. Nguyen Xuan Cuong, Minister of Vietnam Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) said, Vietnam shrimp exports in 2016 expected to achieve more than US$3 billion, and total seafood exports will hit over US$7 billion.

According to the minister, this year, the area for shrimp farming is expected to reach 660,000 hectares with a production of 680,000 MT.

Vietnam shrimp has many opportunities to develop with two major items including black tiger shrimp and whiteleg shrimp. To expand shrimp farming area, the proactivity on seed sources is one of the important factors.

The production of shrimp broodstock currently meet 20% of the domestic demand. In the next 3-5 years, Vietnam can produce all shrimp broodstock for domestic demand.

With higher antidumping duty imposed by the US, Vietnam should expand exports to other markets. Vietnam is looking to export frozen raw shrimps to Australia as the country has a great demand of this kind of product. In the fourth quarter of 2016, a delegation of Australian experts will make a fact-finding tour to Vietnam to inspect whether Vietnam meets requirements in production in order to export raw shrimps to their country or not.
