(vasep.com.vn) According to Aquaculture Department under Directorate of Fisheries (D-Fish), in March 2014, whiteleg shrimp was given priority to farm in many provinces thanks to its short farming period and high productivity.
In the first three months of the year, large increase in whiteleg shrimp farming area was reported in provinces such as Soc Trang with 6,113 hectares, up 167 percent year on year; Ca Mau with 3,704 hectares, representing 5-fold increase; Tra Vinh with 1,828 hectares, showing 4-fold increase; Bac Lieu with 1,573 hectares, up 118 percent; Long An with 1,338 hectares, up 65 percent.
According to D-Fish, the country's fish production in QI/2014 was estimated to touch 1.185 million MT, up 3 percent year on year. In which, capture output reached 687 thousand MT, up 5.6 percent and aquaculture output was 498 thousand MT, equaling to that of the same period of 2013.
The production of farmed shrimp reached 87.5 thousand MT, up 10.1 percent year on year while farmed finfish yielded 346.8 thousand MT, down 4 percent year on year.
