Using bioproducts in aquaculture – sustainable approach

Fish farming particularly intensive

After one year applying rice – shrimp farming model in Ca Mau province showed satisfactory results. Farmers’ awareness and habit of producing, management capacity of relevant agencies and committees made progress significantly.

Productivity, quality of farmed shrimp rose sharply. Productivity of industrial shrimp farming in a crop reached 5.8 MT/ha and those of renovated extensive shrimp farming stood at 580 kg/ha. This progress is due to a combination of science-technology, good control of pond conditions, using suitable bioproduct.

In 2010, Provincial Center for Agriculture and Fisheries Development applied 10 industrial shrimp farming models and 10 renovated extensive shrimp farming ones using bioproducts. As a result, bioproducts help improve water environment and the health of farmed shrimp, reduce diseases and boost productivity.

While shrimp farming area increases fast, hazardous waste is also a problem. Bioproducts play an important part in improving environment and maintaining its sustainable development in the context of increasingly polluted environment and climate changes.

In addition, applying technique and science, high quality seed, and with vertical link among four parties (government, farmers, scientists, and enterprises), labour training, coordination of authorities will boost Ca Mau aquaculture industry to gain new achievements.

In order to reach target of 10,000 ha of industrial shrimp farming area by 2015, the guidelines of agricultural industry is very important. Mr. Le Dung, Director of The Department for Agriculture and Rural Development, said that, the agriculture industry will establish feasible projects to give favourable conditions for developing key farming areas in aiming to create a breakthrough following years.
