(IntraFish) US lawmakers are asking the European Union to remove its tariff on coldwater shrimp caught on the Oregon coast, Reported The World on Friday.
Currently the EU charges a 20 percent tariff on all Oregon shrimp. Almost half of the shrimp caught on the West Coast is shipped to the EU, and European countries have expressed interest in buying even more.
Senators Merkley, Ron Wyden and Lisa Murkowski sent a letter to the Prime Minister of Denmark asking him to go before the European Commission and ask that the tariff be removed.
According to the letter, Denmark’s seafood industry desires the tariff be removed. Denmark’s demand for pink shrimp has outpaced the fisheries in Canada and Iceland, and consumers are looking to Oregon to fill the gap, it says.
